Text-mode instant messenger with multi-protocols support

Default featured post

In Linux world every GUI application has the equal text-mode application as well. This time I was looking for text-mode instant messenger as a replacement of its GUI counterpart like Pidgin, Empathy, and Kopete.

After doing some search on the internet I have found many text-mode instant messenger applications. So I tested some of them and cam up with the best one which from my point of view is Centerim.

It supports ICQ2000, Yahoo!, AIM, MSN, IRC and Jabber protocols. In addition, it has window-based interface. I think that developers utilized Curses library for developing it. Furthermore, it has quite simple and straight forward interface which is easy to use. Finally, by default it is available on the Ubuntu repository.

To install it just type the following command on the terminal.

$ sudo apt-get install centerim

After installation completion just type the application name on shell to run it. Setting up account is really simple and I will not go through it.

Fore more information refer to the man page of the application.
