Solving slowness of Wine in playing Red Alert2 on Ubuntu 12.04

Default featured post

I like Red Alert2 game a lot and I play this game frequently especially when I am bored. This week after few months of not playing this game, I have decided to give a try to this game and play it on my Ubuntu 12.04 for the first time. Before that I have played Red Alert2 on Ubuntu 11.10 and the performance was totally fine and acceptable but unfortunately on 12.04 version with Wine version 1.4 the game is extremely and it is not even playable.

I searched the internet for finding the solution to solve the issue. I almost find nothing regarding the matter except that some people recommended to upgrade Wine to the latest version which might solve the problem. At first, I thought that it might not work but I had no other option to go for. As a result I have updated version of Wine from 1.4 to 1.6 (Latest stable version up to October 2013).

Surprisingly, after upgrading the version of Wine I have seen considerable improvement in the speed of the game and also graphic rendering of the other applications under Wine as well. For instance, in the previous version, Fonts of MS Office 2007 Word were not very clear or look natural but after upgrading it exactly looks the same as Windows. Or in Foxit Reader application, the fonts look better right now.

The process of upgrading Wine in Ubuntu is very easy and you can do it in just three simple steps which are expressed in the following part which I have gotten from official Wine page that I added the link at the end.

Firstly, you need to add Wine repository to be able to install latest version of Wine. For adding repository type below command on terminal.

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa

After that, you need to update repository package in order that new changes will be applied. Updating can be done with running the following command on terminal.

$ sudo apt-get update

Finally, you need to install Wine on your machine with the below command,

$ sudo apt-get install wine 1.5

In the above command, the version of the wine is written 1.5 but it will install latest stable version automatically so you do not need to be worry about that.

Keep in your mind that installing new version of Wine causes to remove the old version but the settings and installed applications will not be affected.
